Cooking with Vintage Toasters
For hundreds of years, the concept of toasting bread has been around. It is
claimed that Egyptians and Romans used to place bread on a fork, and toast
it over a fire. As a delicacy, the Europeans served toast at court in
medieval times. In later years, Americans and the British population were
enjoying toast as well. One of the downfalls of creating toast was how
quickly the bread would burn over a fire. The toast had to be turned
constantly in order to prevent burning.
One of the earliest ideas for a toaster came about in the early 19th
century. There are early renditions of a form of toaster, as a metal rack
was created to hold the bread over a heat source. While this helped with
the holding of the bread, the toast was still quickly burned. In the early
1900's, an electric toaster was created. It seemed conventional enough.
The bread was placed into the toaster, and the toaster would have to be
watched to make sure that the bread did not burn. Soon after the creation
of the electrical toaster came the now vintage Flip-Flop toaster. These
toasters seemed like a sure win for those that loved to eat toast. The
concept was easy; the toaster would use a rack to hold the bread. The rack
was placed near a heating coil, and once browned on one side, it would then
need to be flipped to be toasted on the other side. The down fall of the
flip flop toaster was that even though it cooked the bread into toast, the
bread would still need to be monitored to prevent burning.
The creation of the toaster that is used in most homes and restaurants was
came about in 1919. Charles Strite of Minnesota created a toaster that
included a timer and spring. Once the bread was placed into the respective
slots, the timer would control the length of the cooking time, while the
spring popped the toast up after cooking. This invention by Charles truly
took off in many homes, as the Toastmaster Company took Strite's original
development and embellished on it. The new toaster was shown to have cooked
the toast perfectly on both sides.
The concept of toasting bread has been around for many years, but it was not
until the last century that a toaster was conceived. Vintage toasters seem
to have been outpaced by newer toasters. Many people would agree that
vintage toasters add a true touch of nostalgia to any vintage collection.
Today's toasters are just as versatile as the breads that are toasted in
them. Toasters truly have come a long way since the early days.
