Vintage Schlitz Beer Magazine Ads
For many decades, beer companies have tried to come up with creative ways to
advertise their beer product. One company in particular is Schlitz.
Schlitz has used many different forms of campaigns to promote their beer,
but the most popular by far have been the vintage magazine ads.
Schlitz Brewing Company is based out of Milkwaukee, Wisconsin. The Schlitz company
takes its name after its founder, Joseph Schlitz. Joseph Schlitz came to
America from Germany in 1850. As a young entrepreneur, Schlitz created his
own pubs and beer during the pre Civil War era. This created a beer loving
frenzy among those that were near the Milwaukee area, as saloons and
breweries began to carry his fine concoction. He gained even more popularity
as he donated thousands of barrels of his beer to the Chicago pubs after the
Chicago Fire of 1871. This not only gave him great popularity, but he also
created another production plant in that area.
The 1970's were a wonderful time for the Schlitz company. The company was
then known as the second best brewery in America. It was in the late
Seventies that Schlitz began to see a problem. They changed the way that
the beer was created, which caused an up rise amongst its loyal consumers.
In the early 1980's, many of the Schlitz workers became disgruntled and went
on strike. Serious financial repercussions were a result of the employee
strike. Shortly thereafter, the Schlitz company was purchased by the Stroh
Brewery Company of Detroit, Michigan. There are, however, very small
batches of Schiltz beer that is created today.
Old Schlitz ads have since become very valuable. It is hard to believe that
a company that was second best in the nation close to 30 years ago is now
essentially non-existent. It is through the colorful Schlitz advertisements in
vintage magazines that the legend has carried on. Many people will cut out
the Schlitz ads from magazines and sell them. Even
though Schlitz has all but wained, the memory of the once infamous beer
stays alive through vintage magazine ads.
