MRE's and War Rations
Since battles have been around for American soldiers, many leaders have had
a difficult time trying to figure out how they were going to feed their
squadron. Some troops were only a few men, while others were hundreds of
men large. The feeding situation raised many problems and questions as to
how the troops would be fed. The answer to this question was with war
rations.
Many leaders noticed that their troop would not fight as well without an
adequate amount of food. the first food rations that were created were known
to be all-inclusive. After 1776, most meals for soldiers consisted of a
small portion of meat and bread, and on rare occasion, some vegetables. The
food that was provided was just enough for each soldier at every meal. The
Revolutionary War brought on a change to the food rations, as Congress at
that time dictated that the food rations must consist of beef, pork, or
fish, a vegetable, milk, and rice. Many soldiers complained that there were
not enough fresh vegetables, so subsequently, the wars that followed the
Revolutionary War had less meat, and more vegetables.
Since the war rations of yesteryear's, the foods that are provided to the
American soldiers has drastically changed. Many soldiers are provided hot
meals, while others must resort to MRE's, or Meals Ready to Eat. Such meals
are prepared and preserved in leak-proof bags. These bags are often issued
to many soldiers that are out on the field, and incapable of cooking a warm
meal. Many of the MRE's that are available to soldiers today are also
available to the American public at Army surplus stores. They are often sold
for a few dollars a piece. Military enthusiasts often like to buy the MRE's
at least once to say that they have experienced the MRE if they have not
consumed it previously. Other collectors simply purchase the MRE's so they
can keep them for an indefinite amount of time, as they seem to have a very
long shelf life. MRE's and war rations are indeed meals that keep the
soldiers strong , nourished and ready for any battle.
