Creating Clay Memories with Play-Doh
One of the most innovative creations ever made is Play-Doh. For nearly 50
years, children have loved the the creations that they have made from
Play-Doh. Whether it is a long snake, or a village of clay figurines,
Play-Doh has made a huge impact on many people.
While this modeling clay is simply known as Play-doh, its original name was
Play - Doh Brand Modeling Compound. That may seem like a mouthful to some,
but there is no denying the simplicity and fun that is had when one plays
with Play-Doh. Originally introduced to schools, nurseries, and
kindergartens, Play-Doh made its formal debut in 1956. the first sale of
Play-Doh occurred at Woodward & Lothrop Department Store in Washington, D.C.
The vintage Play-Doh was originally only offered in one size and color; 1
1/2 pound can, and off-white. Due to its swift sales, a year later,
Play-Doh debuted three more colors - blue, yellow and red. The new four pack
combination seemed to be an overnight success. In 1960, the ever-popular
Play-Doh Fun Factory was brought onto the market as well. With the Fun
Factory, children could create all sorts of shapes and figures with their
Play-Doh. The fun vintage modeling clay sparked a large interest in children
overseas when it was introduced to England, Italy and France in 1964.
One of the great moments in Play-Doh history was when the 500,000,000th can
of Play-Doh was created in 1972. This remarkable number has proven that
Play-Doh is indeed a highly desired toy for children of all ages. Creative
changes have been made to Play-Doh over the years, such as brighter colors,
as well as plastic containers, which keeps the clay soft for a longer period
of time. Even with the constant creations that Play-Doh has introduced to
the market since its original debut, one thing is for certain - it has never
lost its luster. From its vintage off-white only days, to the wide array of
colors that they now present, Play-Doh will forever be the "must have"
clay.
