America's Ammunition - Musket Balls
The US military has had to fight many battles since the colonization of the
country. As many battles that have been fought, there are just as many
pieces of military weapons. During the American Revolution, musket rifles
and its ammunition played an important role in protecting the American
soldiers.
Since the American Revolution, there have been many rounds of ammunition
that have been discovered in private properties and abandoned fields. The
ammunition, or musket balls, as they are commonly referred to, were used in
all different sizes. There were approximately right different sizes of
musket balls, all referring to the caliber of the musket rifles themselves.
The musket balls vary in size from .656 to .375 . Often times, civilians
that live in old battle areas find themselves stumbling upon these buried
artifacts in their own backyards. Often times, people that come across these
artifacts keep them for their own personal collection. Others sell the
pieces, or give them to a museum, as they feel that everyone should have the
opportunity to view the military relics.
Similar to the musket ball ammunition are mini balls from the Civil War Era.
Such musket ball ammunition could now be considered as primitive bullets as
the ones that are used today. The projectiles are often found in
battlefields. The discarded ammunition from the Civil War look similar to
something that would be used as a shotgun slug, while others are small .58
mini caliber balls. Others musket ball projectiles have ribbed designs, and
are hollow based. Many of these pieces of ammunition are well over one
hundred years old, and are usually sold in sets from antique dealers. Such
collective sets may be seen at a selling price of $150.00 and up.
Militaria collectors appreciate the value that is goes beyond the surface of
the pieces that are discovered. regardless of the ammunition, be it big or
small, people all around the world are interested in American history, and
are willing to pay any price that is asked for the musket ball pieces and
sets. These pieces are indeed collectible, and are evident pieces of
America's historical past.
