Breaking the Bank with Monopoly

For the past 65 years, Monopoly has become a well loved game. Currently printed in 26 different languages, it comes as no surprise that Monopoly is so popular. During the Great Depression, Charles B Darrow came up with the idea of Monopoly. Being unemployed himself, he was determined to make some sort of money from his creation. He knew that he had a hot ticket item, but was having a difficult time trying to sell the idea. He took the presented game and plans to the Parker Brothers company. The initial Monopoly game was quickly rejected. Parker Brothers saw many flaws and errors to the game, and believed that it would not be profitable.

Leave the Parker Brother office determined to sell his product, Charles Darrow went to a friend for help with selling his game. His friend was a printer, and was eager to help him out by printing up 5,000 sets of the Monopoly game board and money. Charles Darrow sold all five thousand sets at a local Philadelphia department store. After having sold all of the handmade games, Charles Darrow returned to Parker Brothers for another shot at selling his item. This time, he was not turned down.

Parker Brothers has since been the sole producer of the Monopoly game. Since its initial launch, the Parker Brothers company has sold more than 200 million games worldwide. Older game boards and pieces are an antique collectors delight. The collectors realize the popularity and value of the Monopoly game. In recent auctions, original Monopoly games dating back to the 1930's and 40's have been sold for hundreds of dollars. There are various forms of the Monopoly game created today, including commemorative editions. No one can clean the bank with a Monopoly game purchase. In fact, an antique Monopoly game is not only a valuable investment, but a historical one as well.
