Create Delicious Foods with the Aid of a Vintage Stand Mixer
The history of the vintage stand mixer is as interesting as the mixer is
helpful. For close to a century now, the stand mixer has played a leading roles in the kitchen. Not only is it cost effective, but it saves time in the kitchen as well.
The creation of the stand mixer can be traced to a Herbert Johnson in 1908.
Johnson's idea came about when he saw a baker trying to mix dough with a
spoon. Seeing how the baker was desperately trying to knead the large
amount of dough, he came up with the idea of the stand up mixer. The
"spoon" that Herbert Johnson saw the baker use, would become the beaters on
the mixer. There is a large bowl that was used to hold the ingredients that
were going to be cooked. This bowl sits on a base under the beaters. The
beaters are then dropped into the bowl, and with the flick of a switch, the
beaters swiftly got to work. The mixer can be used for mixing, folding,
beating and whipping various foods.
The first commercially available stand mixer was made in 1915 by KitchenAid, and was used primarily in bakeries. In 1919, KitchenAid presented the
first stand mixer for use in the home. To the surprise of many people, the
stand mixer became a quick overnight success.
The first KitchenAid stand mixers weighed in at a whopping 65 lbs! The stand mixers were selling for approximately $189.50 in 1919. Over time, the weight and the price were both dramatically reduced. Other companies produced their versions of the stand mixer, with their versions being lighter and lower priced than their KitchenAid counterparts. Nonetheless, KitchenAid has remained the top selling name
brand for stand mixers. Vintage collectors agree; the stand mixer is by far
one of the most ingenious creations for a kitchen appliance yet.
