Vintage Luggage Labels

It seems as though people today are constantly on the move. Travel, whether it be by airplane, boat, car or train, seems to be inevitable. The way people travel has changed drastically over the years. One way of remembering one's journeys are through vintage luggage labels.

Luggage labels were truly a popular item in their heyday back in the late 19th century. At this time, wealthy individuals were eager to travel all around the world, seeking new adventures in far away lands. During this time, traveling was mostly for leisure purposes. As traveling became more affordable, middle class individuals were able to travel as well. This created a large interest in many people, predominantly, artists. Thus began the creation of luggage labels.

Luggage labels were created and used by airlines and major chain hotels. The main reason for the creation of the luggage labels were only for identification purposes. The luggage labels were attached to the patrons' luggage. This made it easier for the patron and the baggage handles at the hotel, cruise line, airline, etc., to locate the individual's luggage. The luggage tags, bearing the name of the location that it came from, such as a hotel, was not only great for identification, but for advertising purposes as well. Little did the favorite locales know at the time that they were creating little pieces of ephemera history.

Since the beginning of the use of luggage labels, individuals have scrap booked and created many beautiful tokens of remembrance with their luggage tags. One of the best reasons for a collector to collect luggage tags is that most of these are cheap, if not free! Many individuals collect the luggage tags from all of the places that they, or even older family members have been. Each luggage tag tells a well loved story, that only becomes more memorable with time.
