Howdy Doody was not originally named Howdy. Actually, Howdy Doody started off as a vocal character on Saturday morning children's radio. The creators of the radio show had an idea of bringing Howdy Doody to television, and thus, a star was born. In December of 1947, Howdy Doody appeared on Saturday evening television on NBC. The Howdy Doody show created many milestones for NBC, having been the first show to finish 1,000 broadcasts, it was one of the original color programs, and was the first to achieve simultaneous cross country broadcasts.
