Military Canteens
As many militaries as there are all around the world, there are just as many
various supplies for all of the soldiers. Military regimes strive to make
sure that all of their soldiers are properly taken care of. One of the many
items that a field soldier may carry with them is a canteen.
Canteens have long been vital to many soldiers and warriors. Many Native
Americans used canteens that they created from the stomachs of animals that
they had killed. The stomach linings doubled as an excellent way for the
nomadic Native Americans to bring water with them. The water was stored
inside of the hardened pouches, and were often carried by a rope, which was
hauled with the Native Americans. It is this concept that brought us the
military canteens that are vintage to us today.
Various military canteens take on different forms. Vintage German canteens
have a rounded and oblong-sized canteen. The canteen is crafted from
aluminum, and has some sort of plug to keep the water free from dirt as well
as spilling out during travel. The aluminum canteens are often covered with
a tan wool covering, to help keep the water as cool or warm as possible.
The canteens often had leather straps attached to them, similar to the ropes
that Native Americans used. Many soldiers could either loop their canteen
straps thru their belts, or simply carried them in hand while in camp. The
straps were also a great way to keep the canteens off of the ground, so
animals would not be able to get to them while in camp.
Vintage canteens can be seen being sold all over the internet. A simple
internet search for vintage military canteens often prove valuable for many
different resources. Military enthusiasts can compare prices for a specific
canteen that they may be wanting to add to their collections. The internet
is indeed a valuable resource for those seeking to purchase, sell, or
appraise vintage military canteens.
