Military Bayonets

Military outfits from all around the world have had to come up with different ways to defend and protect their soldiers. They have seen different forms of weapons, including rifles, hand grenades, and knives. One of the less common weapon of choice was the bayonet.

Thanks can be given to the French whom introduced the socket bayonet at the end of the seventeenth century. The French military equipped their guns with the bayonets that they had created and were provided with. The socket bayonet had a sleeve that would fit securely around the barrel of a gun, and was secured with a slot and stud. This type of method gave the soldiers the ability to fire their weapons, all the while keeping their bayonets secure.

The bayonet was created as a forms of defense. Many troops would create a two or thee men-deep square while out on the battlegrounds. Such a formation could protect them against a Calvary charge. The bayonet was not really used unless it was evident that the enemy was going to retreat.

During the first World War, all of the soldiers were provided with bayonets. Many of the bayonets that were used were knife-like in nature. However, the French preferred to use a needle pointed bayonet, while the Germans opted to defend their soldiers with saw-bladed styles of the bayonet. It was clear to all in battle that the bayonet was to be used solely for close combat against the enemy. Since such close quarters had to be utilized in order for the bayonets to work, they soon became an almost non-existent weapon. The advancement of machine guns and other rifles soon took over, which virtually depleted the bayonet altogether.

In today's market there are many old bayonets for sale. Bayonets from foreign countries such as Germany and France are often sold at higher rates in the United States. Antique militaria dealers are truly the most informative resource when looking for vintage military bayonets. The antique store dealers have a vast knowledge for the bayonets, and can also provide appraising information. Bayonets may no longer be used by military groups, but they are without a doubt important pieces in many militias histories.
