Creating Cherished Memories with Raggedy Ann and Andy Dolls

On December 24, 1880, the future creator of Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls was born. John Barton Gruelle grew up in Illinois, with the influence of music and literature. At the age of twenty, he began a lucrative career as newspaper cartoonist. It is believed that John and his wife had a daughter that was suffering from a childhood illness. As an attempt to cheer his daughter up, John took one of his daughter's rag dolls and drew a face on it. The rag doll and his daughter became inseparable. Although his daughter died from her childhood illness, his inspiration from the love of his daughter grew into the creation of the Raggedy Ann doll. In 1915, he began to create Raggedy Ann dolls as well as published "Raggedy Ann Stories" a few years later.

Years after his death, the legacy that John Gruelle left behind in his Raggedy Ann and Andy doll creations has remain popular. The idea of a rag doll seemed ideal and economical for that period of time. With a body made of cloth, and hair made of red yarn, the dolls were ideal companions for many children of that era. Parents seemed to enjoy the cheerful dolls as well, often purchasing them for their doll collections.

Since the creation of the Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls, collectors have grown to appreciate them. Over the years, the doll has changed features, but the charm of the doll still remains. Antique collectors have purchased some of the very first Raggedy Ann doll for more than $1,500.00. As time progresses, the value of the Raggedy Ann doll will continue to rise.

Old or new, Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls have captivated the hearts of many people. No matter the value of the doll, many people can not sell their precious Raggedy Ann dolls. Cherished for many years, the Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls are guaranteed to bring treasured memories that will last a lifetime.
